Growth Form: Trees or shrubs, usually tomentose.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Margins entire. 3-veined or 5-veined from base. Petiolate. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Hypanthium well–developed above ovary. Calyx of 5 sepals, persistent. Corolla of (3)4–5(6), pink or white. Stamens numerous, distinct; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior, 1–3-celled, appearing to have 2, 4, or 6 cells by false partitions.

Fruit: Berries globose or ovoid. Seeds few; compressed; embryo coiled or horseshoe–shaped.
